Why the Best Expert Rarely Wins (and How to Become the Obvious Choice)

August 10, 2026
In short: The best expert in a field is often its best-kept secret, overlooked while good-but-not-great competitors get chosen. It is tempting to fix this by chasing more visibility, more content, a bigger audience. That rarely works, because the issue is not how much you are seen. It is your position, and the kind of visibility you use. Mainstream visibility is volume aimed at everyone. Ultra-premium visibility is precise, aimed at the few who can say yes to a big offer. When you look and price like everyone else and broadcast to everyone, the market files you with everyone else, and it never goes looking for the best-kept secret. It goes looking for the obvious choice. The fix is a category of one, plus precise presence aimed at the people who can actually buy it.

Why is the best expert often the least chosen?

Because being chosen is not the same as being good. Everyone at the top of a field is good; being good is the price of entry. What decides who gets the work is who is easiest to recognise as the obvious choice for a specific need. A brilliant expert positioned like everyone else gets filed in with everyone else, compared on rate, and passed over for someone louder and easier to find. It is not fair. It is just how markets sort.

Do you need more visibility, or a different kind?

A different kind. More posts and a bigger following add volume, not standing. I spent years in PR making people visible before I understood that being seen, on its own, rarely made them chosen. A partner of mine calls it the beer froth and the beer. The froth, being seen, matters, but only on real beer, the depth and mastery underneath, and only when it is poured for someone who wants that beer. At the premium level, visibility stops being about volume and becomes about precision: reaching the few who can say yes, with a position that tells them instantly you are the one.

What does "underpositioned" mean?

It means your position understates your value. You have the mastery, but you are described, packaged and priced like the people who do a fraction of what you do, so the market cannot tell the difference. Underpositioned experts have the qualifications. They are simply filed in the wrong place.

How do you become the obvious choice?

You build a category of one. You stop competing on being good and become the only person who does your exact, narrow, specific thing for the exact person who needs it most. When there is no one to compare you to, comparison falls away, and so does price. The question a client asks stops being “why should I choose you?” and becomes “how do I get access to you?”

What actually changes when an expert repositions?

Two things. First, the numbers. Maeve started on $20,000 offers and did not know what she was sitting on. When we looked at her intellectual property, the depth, the range, the audience were hiding in plain sight, and an entire suite of offers emerged. We did not change her craft. We pointed what she already had in the right direction. Today she works on $300,000-plus engagements and holds equity. Second, the identity. The first premium sales change who you are: one can feel like luck, two is validation, and by the third the certainty settles in. You stop hoping to be chosen and start choosing.

Why does positioning matter more now?

Because AI is commoditising everything average and flooding every market with noise. Mass visibility is cheaper by the week; anyone can be seen. What is scarce, and what still cuts through, is being the obvious choice and reaching the right few precisely, sitting on real mastery and a clear position.

Frequently asked questions

Why do less qualified competitors win more clients?

Because they are easier to recognise and choose. Clients rarely pick the objectively best expert; they pick the one positioned as the obvious choice for their specific need. A best-kept secret loses to a clearly positioned competitor every time.

Rarely. That adds volume, and volume is not the constraint. If you are positioned like everyone else, more reach just spreads the same undifferentiated message further. Fix the position first, then aim a precise, curated presence at the few who can actually say yes.

A position where you are the only logical choice for a specific client and need, with no true comparison. Inside a category of one, price stops being the deciding factor because there is nothing to compare you against.

No. It comes from precise positioning to the right buyer, not mass fame. One of our clients had three billionaires agree to work with her without ads or a big following, because she was positioned as the only person who could do the thing.
